abstract NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula I (n is 0, 1 or 2). EXAMPLE:5-Formyl-1-methyl-2-methylthioimidazole. USE:A radiosensitizer having action of enhancing the radiotherapeutic effect on cancer. PREPARATION:A compound expressed by formula II and a compound expressed by formula III are subjected to the Knoevenagel reaction to afford the aimed compund expressed by formula I. The compound expressed by formula II is also a novel substance, and obtained by reducing 5-methoxycarbonyl-1-methyl-2- methylthioimidazole with a metal hydride, e.g. lithium aluminum hydride and oxidizing the resultant 5-hydroxymethyl-1-methyl-2-methylthioimidazole with manganese dioxide, etc.
