abstract PURPOSE: To obtain the titled substance, by reacting a styrene with CO, an alcohol and oxygen in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a Pd (compound), copper compound, halogen compound and compound of a metal selected from Groups 4A, 8A, etc., and CO 2 . n CONSTITUTION: A styrene is reacted with CO, an alcohol, e.g. methanol, cyclopentanol or polyethylene glycol,and oxygen to give the corresponding cinnamic acid ester. In the processes, a catalyst consisting of (A) Pd or a compound thereof, e.g. organic acid salt, inorganic acid salt or complex, (B) a copper compound, e.g. inorganic acid salt, carboxylic acid salt or organic anion salt, (C) a halogen compound and (D) a compound of a metal selected from Groups 4A, 5A, 7A, 8A iron family and 2B is used as a catalyst to carry out the reaction in the presence of CO 2 at 40W160°C under 1W300atm for 0.05W10hr. n EFFECT: The catalyst activity is enhanced by the CO 2 . n USE: A raw material for perfumes, agricultural chemicals, etc. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1987,JPO&Japio
