titleOfInvention Production of 4,4'-(p-hydroxybenzoyl)diphenyl ether
abstract PURPOSE: To obtain the titled substance useful as a raw material for heat- resistant polymers in high yield in a short time, by treating 4,4'-(diphenoxycarbonyl)diphenyl ether in the presence of liquid hydrogen fluoride at a specific temperature to carry out the Fries rearrangement. n CONSTITUTION: 4,4'-(Diphenoxycarbonyl)diphenyl ether is reacted with liquid hydrogen fluoride at 1:1W1,000 molar ratio at -20W+80°C, preferably 0W50°C for several min W several tens of hr to afford the titled substance. The liquid hydrogen fluoride may also functions as a solvent, but an insert solvent, e.g. pentane, cyclohexane, chloroform, benzene, etc., may be used. n EFFECT: Since water is not formed as a by-product, the liquid hydrogen fluoride can be readily separated from the reaction product by distillation and the recovery and reuse can be readily carried out at a low cost. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1987,JPO&Japio
