abstract PURPOSE: To obtain a carrier for immobilizing an enzyme having improved durability and large contact area in the form of porous fibers, by converting a blend of a metal alkoxide with a specific substituted metal alkoxide into an aqueous solution, hydrolyzing the alkoxides to give a sol, concentrating the sol and spinning the resultant concentrated sol. n CONSTITUTION: A hydrolysis catalyst is added to an aqueous solution of a blend of (A) a metal alkoxide, preferably tetraethoxysilane expressed by formula I, etc., with (B) a substituted metal alkoxide, preferably a compound expressed by formula II in which at least one of the alkoxy groups in the metal alkoxide is substituted by an aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon, amino group or alkyl group to hydrolyze the alkoxides and form a sol, which is concentrated, spun, gelatinized and, as necessary, heat-treated.
