titleOfInvention Production of menthone
abstract PURPOSE: To obtain menthone, by subjecting 1,5-dimethyl-4-hexenyl acetal and acetaldehyde to addition reaction, halogenating the resultant compound and intramolecularly alkylating the halogenated compound in the presence of a phase-transfer catalyst. n CONSTITUTION: 1,5-Dimethyl-4-hexenyl acetal and acetaldehyde are subjected to addition reaction to form 4-isopropyl-1-methyl-5-oxohexyl acetate, which is then halogenated and then intramolecularly alkylated in the presence of a phase-transfer catalyst, e.g. benzo-15-crown-5, or an aprotic solvent or the above-mentioned acetate is thermally decomposed or thermally cyclized to give the aimed menthone. n EFFECT: Since the 1,5-dimethyl-4-hexenyl acetal which can be readily synthesized from methylheptenone is used as the raw material, it can be stably and industrially fed at a low cost, and the reaction can be carried out under relatively mild conditions. n USE: A raw material for perfumes, e.g. menthol. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1987,JPO&Japio
