titleOfInvention Production of methacrylimide-containing polymer
abstract PURPOSE:To obtain the titled polymer of improved heat resistance, by polymerizing a mixture of an inert solvent, a monomer for forming a methacrylic polymer, a radical polymerization initiator and a MW modifier in a polymerization zone to a specified degree of reaction, reacting this polymerization solution with an imidating substance in an imidation zone and removing volatile matter from the reaction mixture. CONSTITUTION:A methacrylimide-containing polymer is obtained continuously by the following method. Namely, (1) 10-60wt% inert solvent, 90-40wt% methacrylic acid, methacrylate or monomer mixture based thereon and a MW modifier are fed to a polymerization zone and at least 80wt% of the initial monomer is converted into a polymer at a temperature of 60-170 deg.C, and (2) a compound of the formula: RNH2 (wherein R is H, a 1-12C alkyl, a 7-11C cycloalkyl or a 6-10C aryl) is added to the polymerization solution, and the whole is reacted at a temperature of 150-300 deg.C in an imidation zone. A volatile matter is finally separated and removed from the reaction solution.
