abstract The invention relates to a process for the preparation of alpha -amino- alpha -hydrogen carboxylic acid amides of the formula <CHEM> where R1 represents alkyl, alkaryl, aryl, alkenyl, heteroalkyl or heteroaryl, whether or not substituted, by conversion of the corresponding amino nitriles and is characterized in that the conversion takes place in the presence of hydrogen peroxide and ammonia. By preference use is made of 2-6 moles hydrogen peroxide and 3-12 moles ammonia per mole alpha -amino nitrile.
