titleOfInvention Production of copolymer
abstract PURPOSE: To obtain a copolymer having a high average hydroxyl value and a narrow hydroxyl value distribution, by adjusting the feed rates of starting materials to specified values in copolymerizing allyl alcohol with styrene by using hydrogen peroxide water as an initiator. n CONSTITUTION: Allyl alcohol is copolymerized with styrene batch-wise by using hydrogen peroxide water as an initiator to produce an allyl alcohol/styrene cooligomer. The feed rates of the allyl alcohol, the styrene and the hydrogen peroxide water are changed with time. Namely, the purpose copolymer is obtained by feeding them according to feed patterns as shown in the Figure in which the highest feed rate lies at the middle point of the entire period of feeding time. This polymerization process is suitable for the production of a variety of types in small amounts, and the obtained copolymer is excellent in water resistance, solvent resistance, etc. and can be suitably used as, e.g., a base resin for paints. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1987,JPO&Japio
