abstract PURPOSE: To enhance surface activity as a dispersant or an emulsifier, by preparing an oligomeric surfactant from a sulfonated compound of an oligomer prepared by polymerizing thermal cracking residual oil obtained from a process for thermal cracking of petroleum. n CONSTITUTION: Thermal cracking residual oil of light oil such as naphtha or kerosene is subjected to radical polymerization in the presence of a polymerization initiator such as benzoyl peroxide at a reaction temp. of 50W250°C for a reaction time of 5minW5hr under atmospheric pressure or high pressure to obtain an oligomer with a number average MW of 1,000W50,000. This oligomer is sulfonated at 10W150°C using a sulfonating agent such as sulfuric anhydride or chlorosulfonic acid and the obtained sulfonated compound is neutralized with a neutralizing agent such as sodium hydroxide to obtain an oligomeric surfactant. This surfactant is useful as a dispersant for a coal-water slurry, a cement water reducing agent and a dye dispersant. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1987,JPO&Japio
