abstract PURPOSE: To obtain a compound useful as an intermediate for synthesizing anthraquinone compounds suitable as dye in high purity and in high yield, by sulfonating a 1, 4-diamino-2, 3-dihalogenoanthraquinone while eliminating water and reacting the resultant substance with a cyanating agent. n CONSTITUTION: A 1, 4-diamino-2, 3-dihalogenoanthraquinone is reacted with a sulfonating agent in the presence of a quaternary ammonium compound and/or quaternary phosphonium compound in an aqueous medium at 70W120°C while partially eliminating water from a reaction system to the outside to give 1, 4-diaminoanthraquinone-2, 3-disulfonic acid or its salt and then reacted with a cyanating agent to give the aimed compound. The method of eliminating water to the outside, is carried out by heating at normal pressure or under reduced pressure optionally introducing an inert gas to the reaction system or by azeotropic distillation with an organic solvent. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1987,JPO&Japio
