| abstract | PURPOSE: To provide the titled preparation composed of a formed solid material of expanded ethylcellulose and a drug contained in the shell and/or core of the formed material, floating and remaining in stomach over a long period and capable of continuously releasing the drug to prolong the drug action. n CONSTITUTION: A drug (exhibiting the activity in stomach and desired to have prolonged drug action; e.g. an antipyretic, analgesic and anti-inflammatory agent such as mefenamic acid, an anti-arrhythmic agent such as acebutolol hydrochloride, a hypotensor such as clonidine hydrochloride, etc.) is used as a component of the shell and/or core of a formed solid material of expanded ethylcellulose (preferably formed in the form of pill or pellet) to obtain the objective drug preparation having prolonged activity. The expanded ethylcellulose can be produced by heating an ethoxy derivative of cellulose having an ethoxy-content of 44.0W52.0%, pressurizing with an inert gas and rapidly releasing the pressure to effect the expansion of the cellulose.
