abstract PURPOSE: To obtain a viologen composition having high water-resistance, uniformity, etc., preventing the lowering of reversibility of mutual conversion between viologen compounds and keeping then characteristics of viologen compound, by compounding a polymer having ionic group and a specific straight-chain organic compound. n CONSTITUTION: The objective composition can be produced by mixing (A) a polymer having ionic group (carboxyl group, quaternary ammonium group, etc., and their salts) with (B) a straight-chain organic compound having (i) plural (preferably 2 or 3) straight-chain hydrophobic groups (preferably 4W30C straight-chain alkyl group or its halogen-substituted group) or one or more (preferably one) straight-chain hydrophobic group containing a rigid fragment (e.g. group of formula I, II, etc.) in the chain and (ii) an ionic group (preferably quaternary ammonium group or its salt) and (C) a viologen compound. The amount of the component B is 0.2W5 times equivalent to the ionic group of the component A and that of the component C is 0.05W3 times equivalent to the component B.
