titleOfInvention Optically active alpha-dinitrophenylpropionic acid
abstract NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by the formula (* is asymmetric carbon; R is alkyl, aryl or heterocyclic ring). n EXAMPLE: S(+)-α-(2,4-Dinitrophenyl)propionic acid. n USE: A synthetic intermediate for medicines and agricultural chemicals useful also as an optical resolving agent for various amines from racemic modifications thereof. n PREPARATION: α-Phenylpropionic acid is reacted with nitric acid, preferably fuming nitric acid in the presence of sulfuric acid at 20W80°C to afford the aimed compound expressed by the formula. The nitric acid to be used for nitration is used in a slight excess of 2 equivalents, preferably 2.3W2.7 equivalents based on the α-phenylpropionic acid. The compound expressed by the formula is readily obtained by nitrating optically active α-phenylpropionic acid, derived from optically active lactic acid and obtained by a fermentation method according to this invention. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1987,JPO&Japio
