titleOfInvention Production of flame-retarding copolymer
abstract PURPOSE: To obtain the titled copolymer freed from bleeding, emission of odor, smoking and coloration during molding, by partially esterifying a copolymer having acid anhydride groups in side chains with a chlorinated or brominated monoalcohol. n CONSTITUTION: 1mol of maleic anhydride is copolymerized with 1W10mol of a vinyl compound copolymerizable therewith, represented by formula I [wherein R' or CH 3 , R 1 is Ph, CN, COOR 4 (wherein R 4 is CH 3 , C 2 H 5 , C 4 H 9 or the like) or a group of formula II or III (wherein X is a group of formula IV or V, Cl, CN or COOR 4 )] to obtain a copolymer (A) having acid anhydride groups in side chains. Component A is reacted with 1W0.4mol, per mol of the maleic anhydride in component A, of a chlorinated or brominated alcohol (B) (e.g., 2,2-dichloroethanol) at 40W150°C at an atmospheric, superatmospheric or subatmospheric pressure for 2W50hr to obtain a flame-retarding copolymer as a partial ester. If desired, this partial ester is reacted with 1mol, per 1W0.2mol of its carobxyl groups, of an unsaturated epoxy compound (e.g., glycidyl acrylate) at 20W120°C for 1W30hr to obtain a similar flame-retarding copolymer. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1987,JPO&Japio
