abstract | PURPOSE: Copolymerization of a vinyl monomer and another monomer bearing COOH group is followed by esterification, then a vinyl monomer is additionally polymerized to give a resin which is suitable for use in coating and adhesive, because it has good pigment-dispersing properties, high resistance to wetting, and high dispersibility into fine particles. n CONSTITUTION: In a non-aqueous solvent mainly consisting of petroleum aliphatic hydrocarbon, a vinyl monomer soluble in the solvent such as lauryl methacrylate and a monomer bearing -COOH such as acrylic acid are copolymerized in the presence of a polymerization initiator to produce a copolymer containing 0.05W10mol% of -COOH in its structure of formula I (R 1 is H, methyl; R 2 is alkyl; n is 20W1,000). The monomer of formula II in the copolymer such as glycidyl acrylate is esterified to form a copolymer of formula III where the remaining -COOH is less than half of the initial content or less than 0.1mol%. Finally, a vinyl monomer soluble in the non-aqueous solvent is additionally polymerized to give a polymer which has contains 0.5W15wt% of gel in the nonaqueous resin with a crosslinking structure containing -COOH groups. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1987,JPO&Japio |
