abstract | PURPOSE: To improve the durability of magnetic recording layers by providing protective layers consisting of cobalt oxide Co 3 O 4 on the recording layers. n CONSTITUTION: The cobalt oxide protective layer of Co 3 O 4 is more preferably a random-oriented protective layer. The Co 3 O 4 which is the cobalt oxide is formed by a sputtering method, vacuum deposition, etc. using a cobalt metal as a target and evaporating source in a oxidizing gaseous atmosphere. A polyethylene terephthalate film is used as a substrate 1 and the thin metallic layers 2 consisting of a nickel-iron alloy and having high magnetic permeability and the vertical magnetic recording layers 3 consisting of the thin cobalt-chromium (20wt% chromium) alloy films are successively laminated by an opposed target type sputtering method. The protective layers 4 of the cobalt oxide Co 3 O 4 are further laminated thereon by a reactive sputtering method using the cobalt metal as a target in an oxidizing gaseous atmosphere. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1986,JPO&Japio |
