abstract | PURPOSE: To produce the titled compound in high purity, by condensing an alkylbenzene with acetaldehyde, decomposing the oligomer of acetaldehyde existing in the organic layer containing the produced titled compound before distillation, and distilling the organic phase. n CONSTITUTION: An alkylbenzene is condensed with acetaldehyde, and the organic liquid layer containing the produced diarylethane is recovered and distilled to obtain diarylethane. In the above process, the acetaldehyde oligomer (i.e. aldol-type compound) produced as a by-product of the condensation reaction is decomposed, prior to distillation, by the dehydration e.g. by heating, and the organic liquid layer is distilled to separate purified diarylethane. n EFFECT: Since no foaming phenomenon takes place during distillation, the process can be carried out without using particular distillation apparatus. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1986,JPO&Japio |
