titleOfInvention Production of methacrylic acid
abstract PURPOSE: To obtain methacrylic acid in high selectivity, purity and yield, in single stage reaction, by the vapor-phase catalytic reaction of tert0butanol with nitric acid as an oxidizing agent in the presence of a catalyst. n CONSTITUTION: Methacrylic acid is produced by dehydrating and oxidizing tert-butanol by the vapor-phase catalytic reaction of 1mol of the butanol with ≥6mol of nitric acid (preferably 0.1W60% aqueous solution of nitric acid) in the presence of a catalyst in an inert gas or oxidizing gas atmosphere under normal pressure or positive pressure at 150W500°C, preferably 200W450°C. The by-produced nitrogen dioxide and water are made to react with an oxygen- containing gas and the obtained nitric acid is reused in the reaction. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1986,JPO&Japio
