titleOfInvention Production of n-(alpha-hydroxyethyl)pyrrolidone
abstract PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as a synthetic raw material of N-vinylpyrrolidone in high yield, by reacting 2-pyrrolidone with acetaldehyde in the presence of a specific weakly basic salt catalyst. n CONSTITUTION: The objective compound can be produced by reacting 2- pyrrolidone with acetaldehyde at -10W+60°C, preferably 0W50°C in the presence of a catalyst comprising a weakly basic salt composed of a weak base and a weak acid having a pKa value of 4W15. The yield can be further improved by precipitating the produced objective compound during the reaction and continuing the reaction. The weakly basic salt used as the above catalyst is preferably potassium carbonate, sodium carbonate, potassium phosphate, etc., and its amount is 0.0001W10mol%, or in the case of supplying acetaldehyde in vapor form, preferably 0.01W0.5mol% based on 2-pyrrolidone. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1986,JPO&Japio
