abstract PURPOSE:To provide or absorptive article which does not cause drop-out of a polymer from a substrate, has excellent feeling, etc. and is suitable for use as diaper, etc., by discontinuously depositing a water-absorbing polymer on a fibrous substrate and wrapping the substrate itself up in part of the polymer. CONSTITUTION:An aq. soln. of a water-soluble ethylenically unsaturated monomer (e.g. sodium methacrylate) capable of converting into a water-soluble water- absorbing polymer is applied to a fibrous substrate contg. a hydrophobic fiber (e.g. polypropylene fiber) blended therewith to obtain a composite material wherein the monomer is discontinuously distributed while the substrate fiber itself is wrapped up in at least part of the monomer droplets. The monomer is polymerized into a water-absorbing polymer. The resulting absorptive composite material is dried to obtain the desired absorptive article. In the article, the water-absorbing polymer is discontinuously deposited on the fibrous substrate, and the substrate itself is wrapped up in the form of a nearly sphere in part of the polymer. Thus, the polymer does not drop out of the substrate.
