titleOfInvention | Production of p-xylene |
abstract | PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound in a higher equilibrium concentration than the ordinary value with high selectively, by alkylating toluene with methanol in the presence of a zeolite catalyst fired at a specific temperature without using zeolite catalyst subjected to ion exchange with Ba, etc. n CONSTITUTION: Toluene is reacted with methanol in the presence of an H type ZSM-5 type zeolite catalyst fired at 900W1,050°C at 500W600°C within for 1W20 g.hr/mol contact time range to give p-xylene. The molar ratio of the toluene to methanol is preferably about 0.1W10. The ZSM-5 type zeolite used as the catalyst is a hydrogen type zeolite obtained by subjecting an alkali metal cation normally contained as a cation after synthesis to ion exchange with proton. The firing is preferably carried out in an oxidizing atmosphere, e.g. air. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1986,JPO&Japio |
