titleOfInvention Production of polyarylene sulfide
abstract PURPOSE:To obtain the titled polymer having high melt viscosity and whiteness and excellent thermal stability, by reacting an alkali metal sulfide compound with a polyhalogenated aromatic compound in a polar organic solvent in the presence of a specific alkali metal compound. CONSTITUTION:The objective polymer can be produced by dissolving (A) n alkali metal sulfide compound such as lithium sulfide and (B) a polyhalogenated aromatic compound (e.g. p-dichlorobenzene) in (C) a polar organic solvent and reacting (D) a phenolic aromatic sulfonic acid alkali metal salt of formula (Ar is 6-24C aromatic group; M is alkali metal; m and n are 1 or 2) (e.g. sodium salt of phenol-4-sulfonic acid) with (E) an alkali metal hydroxide (e.g. lithium hydroxide) and/or an alkali metal alcoholate (e.g. sodium methylate) in the above solution preferably in N2 atmosphere.
