abstract PURPOSE: To obtain the titled thin film-type magnetic recording medium having a recording layer formed with the thin film of metal consisting essentially of ferromagnetic metal having excellent durability by providing a protective layer composed of cobalt oxide consisting essentially of Co 3 O 4 having a visible prismatic structure. n CONSTITUTION: A cobalt oxide consisting essentially of Co 3 O 4 and having a visible pillar-shaped structure is used. When a magnetic recording medium is cut to form an extremely thin piece which is observed by a transmission electron microscope, the oxide can be observed as vertical stripes vertical to the layer surface on the side cross section of the oxide layer. The protective layer of cobalt oxide is formed in an oxidizing gas atmosphere by vacuum deposition, sputtering, etc., with metallic cobalt as the vaporization source of a target or by RF sputtering using powdery target by cobalt oxide such as Co 3 O 4 . For example, a metallic thin film 2 of a high-permeability nickel alloy and a vertical magnetic recording layer 3 of a cobalt-chromium alloy thin film are successively laminated on both surfaces of a substrate 1 of polyethylene terephthalate film and a protective layer 4 is further laminated thereon in an oxidizing atmosphere with metallic cobalt as the target. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1986,JPO&Japio
