abstract NEW MATERIAL:An optically active sesquiterpene compound expressed by formulas I, II and III [R 1 is 2-benzyloxyethyl; R is H or methyl; R 3 is H; R 4 is hydroxyl, l-menthyloxy or R 3 and R 4 together form =0; R 5 and R 6 are H or together form =0; R 7 is 2-benzyloxyethyl group, 2-hydroxyethyl group, formylmethyl group, 2-phenylseleno-2-cyanoethyl group, 2-cyanovinyl group or 2-acetylvinyl group; R 8 is methyl, hydroxymethyl or methanesulfonic acid salt except when formula III represents (+)-cis-α-irone]. n USE: Useful as a nonnatural type perfume having a fragrance with new properties. n PREPARATION: A diene expressed by formula IV is reacted with maleic anhy dride to give the aimed compound expressed by formula I. The compound expressed by formula II is obtained by treating the compound expressed by formula I with an alkali, and reacting the resultant compound with iodine.
