titleOfInvention Production of p-benzylbiphenyl
abstract PURPOSE: To obtain the titled substance in high yield, by reacting o- benzylbiphenyl with biphenyl in the presence of Friedel-Crafts catalyst and preferably a benzyl halide as a cocatalyst in a polar solvent under heating. n CONSTITUTION: o-Benzylbiphenyl is reacted with biphenyl in a molar ratio of 1:3W7 in the presence of Friedel-Crafts catalyst and a benzyl halide as a cocatalyst in a polar solvent (e.g., aromatic nitro compound) under heating, to give the aimed substance. o-Benzylbiphenyl and biphenyl are preferably a reaction mixture comprising o-benzylbiphenyl as a by-product and unreacted biphenyl which are obtained by reacting biphenyl with a benzyl halide in the presence of Friedel-Crafts catalyst. Anhydrous AlCl 3 is preferably as the Friedel-Crafts catalyst. n USE: A thermoplastic resin for heat-sensitive recording material, etc. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1986,JPO&Japio
