abstract PURPOSE: To obtain a magnetic recording medium having a high recording sensitivity and a large reproducing output by forming a low-coercive force layer by the sputtering method with a specific 'permalloy(R)' alloy as a target. n CONSTITUTION: When the low-coercive force is formed by the sputtering method with the 'Permalloy(R)' alloy of crystal particle size number ≥4 as the target, the low-coercive force layer having a very good soft magnetic characteristic is formed stably. If the 'Permalloy(R)' alloy having a smaller particle size number, namely, the 'Permalloy(R)' alloy having a larger crystal particle size is used as the target to perform sputtering, and a target surface according to the size of crystal particles remains. Though the target surface after sputtering is smooth when the target of particle size number about 5 is used, the target surface is rough and the ruggedness of the surface is intensified in accordance with the progression of sputtering when the target of particle size number ≤3 is used. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1986,JPO&Japio
