abstract | PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as a synthetic raw material for ethylene glycol, in high yield, by reacting carbon monoxide with formaldehyde dialkyl acetal in the presence of a cobalt catalyst and a base. n CONSTITUTION: The objective alkoxyacetic acid ester can be produced by reacting carbon monoxide with formaldehyde dialkyl acetal in the presence of a cobalt catalyst and a base. The cobalt catalyst is e.g. a cobalt compound used conventional in oxo reaction, etc. (e.g. dicobalt octacarbonyl) and a cobalt compound capable of forming cobalt carbonyl under the reaction condition (e.g. cobalt acetate). A trivalent phosphorus compound (e.g. tri-n-butylphosphine) may be combined with the cobalt catalyst and the base.
