abstract | PURPOSE: To obtain an ultrahigh molecular weight uniform polyethylene, having improved processability, and capable of giving molded articles of high quality, by polymerizing ethylene in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a solid catalyst component containing Mg, Ti and V and an organometallic compound under specific conditions. n CONSTITUTION: Ethylene is polymerized in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a solid catalyst component containing at least Mg, Ti and/or V, e.g. a compound containing TiCl 4 supported on MgCl 2 , and an organometallic compound, e.g. triethylaluminum, in the absence of hydrogen or in a reduced hydrogen concentration to form 70W99.5pts.wt. polyethylene having 12W32dl/g intrinsic viscosity in decalin at 135°C. Ethylene is subsequently polymerized in the hydrogen concentration increased by the above-mentioned reaction, preferably 35W95mol% to form 30W0.5pts.wt. polyethylene having a low intrinsic viscosity. Thus, the aimed ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene having 10W30dl/g intrinsic viscosity in decalin at 135°C is obtained. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1986,JPO&Japio |
