abstract PURPOSE: To obtain a high-elasticity and high-strength whisker useful as an isotropic reinforcement for composite materials, by polymerizing and crystallizing a derivative of p-hydroxybenzoic acid in a specified solvent. n CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I [wherein R 1 is H or formula II, R 3 is a 1W4C alkyl or a phenyl group containing 0W3 methyl groups, R 2 is H or a phenyl group having 0W3 1W2C alkyl groups and either R 1 or R 2 is H] is polymerized. As said compound, p-acetoxybenzoic acid is particularly preferable. As the solvent, one which has a b.p. ≥270°C, in which poly(p-oxybenzoyl) is insoluble or difficultly soluble and which is unreactive with a compound of formula I is used (a paraffin is particularly preferable). A compound of formula I is added to said solvent to that the concentration of the compound of formula I or its oligomer may be 0.3W4.5wt% (based on the polymer obtained) and is polymerized and crystallized at 265°C or above without agitation or with low-speed agitation. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1986,JPO&Japio
