abstract PURPOSE: o-Fluorobenzoic acid, a readily available starting material, is used to effect the reaction of the compound with oxygen and water in the presence of a copper catalyst to enable the high-yield production of the titled substance which is used as a starting material for producing liquid crystals and insecticides through simple process. n CONSTITUTION: In the presence of a copper catalyst, preferably in the coexistence of a magnesium catalyst, o-fluorobenzoic acid is allowed to react with oxygen and water to give the objective compound. The copper catalyst is, e.g., powdery copper, porous copper, copper o-fluorobenzoate in a catalyst amount. The magnesium catalyst is, e.g., magnesium oxide and the amount is a catalyst one.
