titleOfInvention Production of 6-nitro-3-chlorobenzaldehyde
abstract PURPOSE: To isolate the titled compound useful as a raw material for agricultural chemicals in high purity, by oxidizing 3-chlorotoluene as a starting material, nitrating the resultant oxidation product, and purifying the resultant nitrated substitution product mixture consisting essentially of the titled compound. n CONSTITUTION: 3-Chlorotoluene produced by separating a mixture of 2-, 3- and 4-chlorotoluenes obtained by nuclear chlorination and isomerization of toluene with an adsorbent as a starting material is oxidized to give 3-chlorobenzaldehyde, which is then nitrated to afford a mixture containing 6-nitro-3-chlorobenzaldehyde as a main component and a small amount of 2-nitro-3-chlorobenzaldehyde, etc. The resultant mixture is then purified by a method, e.g. recrystallization, to afford the aimed 6-nitro-3-chlorobenzaldehyde. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1985,JPO&Japio
