abstract NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R is H or lower alkyl; X is H, lower alkyl or lower alkoxy; n is 0W3). n EXAMPLE: 4-Methoxy-2-methylbenzylidene. n USE: A synthetic intermediate of fluoran compound useful as a color-developing component of a leuco-type heat-sensitive recording material, etc. n PREPARATION: The compound of formula I is prepared by reacting 4-alkoxy-2- methylaniline of formula II with a benzaldehyde derivative of formula III in a solvent such as alcohol, dioxane, etc. at a temperature between room temperature and the boiling point of the solvent for several hours.
