abstract | PURPOSE: To obtain a nitrile in high selectivity, by subjecting a gaseous mixture of an organic compound containing a methyl group directly linked to a (hetero) aromatic ring or methyl group directly linked to C=C bond and NO to contact reaction in a catalyst of zinc oxide. n CONSTITUTION: A gaseous mixture of a compound [e.g., compound shown by the formula I (R 1 is 1W4C alkyl, alkoxy, or halogen; m is 0, or 1] containing CH 3 directly linked to an aromatic ring, a compound (e.g., compound shown by the formula II) containing CH 3 directly linked to a hetero aromatic ring, or a compound [e.g., compound shown by the formula III (R 2 is H, or CH 3 )] directly linked to C=C bond and NO is subjected to contact reaction on a catalyst of zinc oxide or zinc oxide supported on a carrier (e.g., silica, or magnesia) at 350W600°C, to give a corresponding nitrile.
