abstract PURPOSE:To impart water resistance to a coated film, thereby prevent fading from occurring upon immersion in water and prevent sticking of a thermal head to the surface of the film or adhesion of scum to the thermal head from occurring when recording on the surface of the coated film, by incorporating an acetoacetyl-containing water-soluble high molecular weight substance into a protective layer. CONSTITUTION:The protective layer comprising an acetoacetyl-containing water- soluble high molecular weight substance is provided on a thermal color forming layer. By this, penetration of a plasticizer, an oil or the like into the color forming layer is prevented from occurring, a preventive effect against fading at the time of bringing the color forming layer into close contact with a flexible polyvinyl chloride film or at the time of adhesion of an oil or the like to the layer is obtained, and effects on a desensitizing action for a color forming property, lowering in brightness or the like are also obtained. Acetoacetyl groups can be incorporated into a water-soluble high molecular weight substance by, for example, a method of esterifying the substance by an acetoacetic acid. The content of the acetoacetyl groups in the high molecular weight substance may be from 0.05mol% to the upper limit of the range in which the substance remains water-soluble. The acetoacetyl content is ordinarily 0.1-20mol%, particularly, 0.5-10mol%.
