titleOfInvention Production of ethylenic copolymer
abstract PURPOSE: To obtain a copolymer with a high ethylene content and narrow molecular weight distribution in the state of suppressed formation of insoluble components in a polymer solution, by reacting ethylene with an α-olefin in the presence of a specific vanadium compound and organoaluminum compound as a catalyst. n CONSTITUTION: Vanadium trichloride described in ASTM 15-382 is reacted with an alcohol, preferably methyl alcohol in a molar amount of 1W20 times that of the vanadium trichloride to give a vanadium compound expressed by formula I (ROH is alcohol; m is 0W1.5; n is 0.5W3.5), which is then mixed with (B) an aluminum compound expressed by formula II (Y is hydrocarbon; X is halogen or alkoxyl; l is 0W2) at 1:1 molar ratio between the components (A) and (B) to form a polymerization catalyst. Ethylene is reacted with an α-olefin, e.g. butene- 1, in the presence of the resultant catalyst preferably at -80W+100°C to give the aimed copolymer. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1985,JPO&Japio
