abstract NEW MATERIAL:Fluoran compounds of formula I , wherein R 1 , R 2 are each H, a 1W8C alkyl, cyclohexyl, tetrahydrofurfuryl, cyclohexylmethyl; R 3 is H, halogen, methyl, benzyl, alkoxyalkyl; X is H, halogen; R 4 , R 5 are each H, a 1W4C alkyl, at least one of R 4 , R 5 is always alkyl. n USE: Dye precursors which develop deep black when brought into contact with an acidic substance and are suitable for use in the production of thermal recording paper, electrothermal recording sheet and photochromic recording sheet. n PREPARATION: A diphenylamine derivative of formula II (wherein R 3 , X are as defined above, R 4 is H, acetyl, lower alkyl) is reacted with a benzophenone derivative of formula III (wherein R 1 , R 2 , R 4 , R 5 are as defined above) in the presence of sulfuric acid. The pH of the reaction mixture is adjusted to 8W10 in water with an aq. NaOH soln. The mixture is filtered. Toluene and an aq.
