abstract PURPOSE: To obtain the titled magnetic material having high coercive force, by reducing a powder composed of specific acicular particles with CO or a mixture of CO and H 2 , and contacting the product again with CO or a mixture of CO and H 2 . n CONSTITUTION: Powder composed of acicular particles having an average particle diameter (long axis) of 0.2W5μm and an average aspect ratio of 3W50:1 and containing FeOOH, α-Fe 2 O 3 or γ-Fe 2 O 3 is made to contact with CO or a mixture of CO and H 2 at 300W400°C to reduce the iron compound to Fe 3 O 4 . The product is again made to contact with CO or a mixture of CO and H 2 at 300W400°C for 1W10hr. The flow rate of the CO or the CO mixture is 1W1,000ml/min per 1g of the iron compound. A magnetic material containing acicular iron carbide particle having an aspect ratio of 10, an average particle diameter of 0.7μm and a coercive force of 1024Oe can be produced by this process. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1985,JPO&Japio
