abstract | PURPOSE: To obtain the titled oligomer with suppressed formation of THF at a relatively low temperature, by direct esterification in the presence of a specific amount of a mixed catalyst of a titanium compound and aluminum compound at a specific molar ratio. n CONSTITUTION: Terephthalic acid is directly esterified with 1,4-butanediol in the presence of a catalyst. In the process, a mixed catalyst of a titanium compound, e.g. titanium tetraethoxide or titanium oxalate, and an aluminum compound, e.g. aluminum triethoxide, at 75/25W25/75 molar ratio in an amount of 0.06W 0.13mol%, preferably 0.07W0.12mol%, based on the acid component is used as the catalyst, and reaction is carried out at ≤215°C to give the aimed oligomer having ≤4,000 equivalents/ton acid value and ≥50% esterification ratio.
