titleOfInvention Preparation of n-(alpha-hydroxyethyl)formamide
abstract PURPOSE: To obtain the titled substance useful as a raw material for N-vinyl formamide easily in high yield, by reacting formanide with acetaldehyde in the presence of a weakly basic salt catalyst consisting of a weak base and a weak acid having a pKa value within a specific range. n CONSTITUTION: Formamide is reacted with acetaldehyde in the presence of a weakly basic salt catalyst consisting of a weak base and a weak acid having 4W15 pKa value, e.g. potassium carbonate, potassium phosphate or sodium pyrophosphate, to afford the titled aimed substance. Preferably, the molar ratio between the formamide and the acetaldehyde to be used is usually 1:1.0W5.0, and the amount of the catalyst to be used is 0.01W10mol% based on the formamide. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1985,JPO&Japio
