titleOfInvention Liquid crystal substance and liquid crystal composition
abstract NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula I (X is -CH 2 O- or -OCH 2 -; R is 1W22C alkyl and alkoxyl; R* is optically active group containing asymmetric carbon atom; m and n are 1 or 2). n EXAMPLE: 2-Methylbutyl S-4-(p-octyloxygenzoyloxy)-4-biphenylcarboxylate. n USE: One component in liquid crystal compositions, particularly a strongly dielectric liquid drystal compound having improve response to image display, improved light resistance and a wide temperature range (MR) exhibiting strong dielectric property even by itself but capable of exhibiting a wide MR near room temperature by mixing with another strongly dielectric liquid crystal. n PREPARATION: For example, a compound expressed by formula II as a raw material is halogenated to give a halide expressed by formula III (Hal is halogen), which is then reacted with an optically active compound expressed by formula IV to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula I (X is -CH 2 O-). n COPYRIGHT: (C)1985,JPO&Japio
