PURPOSE:To obtain a schiff base useful as agricultural chemicals, drugs, a raw material for them, inhibitor for aging, liquid crystal, etc. in a short time in high yield, by reacting a carbonyl compound with a primary amine in the presence of a boron trihalide. CONSTITUTION:A compound shown by the formula I (R1 and R2 H, alkyl, aryl, heterocyclic group, etc. except the case where R1 are R2 are H at the same time) is reacted with a compound shown by the formula II (R3 is alkyl, aryl, heterocyclic group, etc.) as a catalyst, to give a compound shown by the formula III. Boron trifluoride and boron trifluoride ethyl ether are especially pref. as the catalyst, and an amount of it used is 0.5-2.0wt% based on the carbonyl compound. A compound wherein R1 and R2 are both aryl or heterocyclic group, or at least one of R1 and R2 is aryl or heterocyclic group having substituent group at rotho position based on CO may be cited as the compound shown by the formula I which is especially pref. applied. |
