abstract | PURPOSE: To obtain an azetidinone derivative useful as a synthetic intermediate for β-lactam based antibiotic substances, etc., by reacting a compound obtained by reacting an N-carbobenzoxyglycine with an alkyl halogenated carbonate with an imine compound. n CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I (ROCO is a protecting group of the amino group; COOR 1 is esterified carboxyl group) is reacted with a compound of formula II (R 2 is a protecting group of the imino N atom in the form of imino; R 3 is organic residue) or a salt thereof to give a compound of formula III. The molar ratio between the compounds of formulas II and I is preferably 1:1W3, and the reaction is carried out at -20W+40°C for 5W40min.
