abstract A process for preparing a 3,4,6-trisubstituted 3-alkylthio-1,2,4-triazin-5-one of the formula <IMAGE> in which R1 is alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, optionally substituted cycloalkyl or optionally substituted aralkyl, R2 is amino, alkylamino or alkyl, and R3 is alkyl, halogenoalkyl, alkoxyalkyl, optionally substituted cycloalkyl, optionally substituted aryl or optionally substituted aralkyl, which comprises reacting a 3-mercapto-1,2,4-triazin-5-one of the formula <IMAGE> with an ester of an oxygen-containing acid as an alkylating agent, the reaction being effected at a temperature between about -20 DEG and 180 DEG C. in the presence of an at least equimolar amount of a strong oxygen-containing acid.
