titleOfInvention Production of phenolic resin for laminated sheet
abstract PURPOSE: To produce a phenolic resin for use in laminated sheets, excellent in electrical properties and punchability and good in releasability after molding, by reacting a tall oil fatty acid ester with a phenol in the presence of both boron trifluoride as a catalyst and water as a promotor. n CONSTITUTION: An ester of tall oil fatty acid with a mono- or polyalcohol is reacted with a phenol by using boron trifluoride or its complex with phenol or ether as a catalyst and water as a promotor. The desired phenolic resin for use in laminated sheets is obtained by reacting the above reaction product or its mixture containing a phenol with an aldehyde in the presence of an alkali catalyst to form a resol. Water as the catalyst is added in an amount of 0.1W2wt%. The reaction temperature is preferably 100W150°C, and the reaction time is suitably 10W300min. The ester and the phenol are mixed preferably in amounts to provide an ester/phenol ratio of 0.5W1. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1984,JPO&Japio
