abstract PURPOSE: To prepare N-cyano-N'-methyl-N"-{ 2-[ ( 5-methylimidazol-4-yl )-methylthio]ethyl}guanidine by reacting quaternary ammonium salt of 4-methylimidazole with corresponding mercaptan. n CONSTITUTION: The compound of formula I can be prepared by (1) reacting the compound of formula VI with the compound of formula III (R 1 and R 2 are lower alkyl, lower alkenyl, aralkyl or together with N form a heterocyclic group) and HCHO at 50W100°C to obtain the tertiary amine of formula IV, (2) reacting the amine with the alkylation agent of formula V (R 3 is lower alkyl, lower alkenyl or aralkyl; Q is acid residue), and (3) reacting the resultant quaternary ammonium salt of formula II with a mercaptan of formula VII in a lower alcohol solvent such as methanol. n EFFECT: The compound can be obtained by one-pot reaction under mild condition, and accordingly, the yield is high. n USE: Remedy for ulcer. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1984,JPO&Japio
