titleOfInvention Method for separating ethylene glycol
abstract PURPOSE: To obtain ethylene glycol as a distillation residue, by adding a lower ketone to a mixture containing the ethylene glycol, separating the resultant cyclic ketal by distillation, adding excess water thereto, and redistilling the resultant mixture. n CONSTITUTION: A lower ketone, e.g. acetone or methyl ethyl ketone, is added to a mixture containing ethylene glycol to convert the ethylene glycol into a cyclic ketal, e.g. 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolane or 2-methyl-2-ethyl-1,3-dioxolane, which is then separated by distillation. Excess water is then added thereto, and the resultant mixture is redistilled to give the ethylene glycol as a distillation residue. n EFFECT: This method is applicable to not only the separation of ethylene glycol prepared from a synthetic gas from a catalyst and high-boiling solvents but also the separation from any mixtures. n USE: A raw material for polyester, solvents, nonvolatile anti-freezes and coolants. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1984,JPO&Japio
