abstract PURPOSE:To raise detecting sensitivity of a polishing depth position, and to execute exactly and uniformly polishing by constituting so that electric resistance of a polishing detecting electrode part of a polishing depth detecting pattern is made larger than that of a lead part. CONSTITUTION:An electrode part 16 consists of a quality of material whose specific resistance is high, for instance, permalloy, and a lead part 17 consists of a quality of material whose specific resistance is low, for instance, copper. Volume specific resistance (rhoA) of permalloy is about 20muOMEGAcm, and that (rhoB) of copper is 1.673muOMEGAcm. When width of the electrode part 16 of a detecting pattern 15, length of the polishing depth direction, width of a connecting part of the lead part 17 and the electrode part 16, its length, width of the lead part 17, its length, and thickness of the whole are denoted as W1, l1, W2, l2, W3, l3 and (t), respectively, and a desired polishing position is set to a position of l1/2 from the tip, a resistance variation portion DELTAR in case when polishing is executed to a desired position becomes DELTAR=rhoAW1/l1t, and a large resistance variation rate is obtained.
