abstract PURPOSE:To detect an induced voltage by a detection conductor and to detect the remaining amount of toner, by forming a thin toner layer uniformly on a magnetic sleeve supported rotatably in a hopper and impressing AC biases to a toner layer specifying member and the sleeve. CONSTITUTION:The hopper 1 has the detection conductor 7 of iron, etc., held rotatably in the center and single-component magnetic toner 2 is stored therein. The magnetic sleeve 3 for development is supported rotatably in the hopper 1 and the toner-layer-thickness specifying member 4 is fitted to the hopper 1 with a gap g1. Voltage impressing means 5 and 6 impress AC bias voltages to the sleeve 3 and the specifying member 4. The detection conductor 7 generates an induced voltage on the basis of said impressed AC bias voltages. The induced voltage varies with magnetic conductivity according to the toner amount between the sleeve 3 and the specifying member 4. Consequently, the remaining amount of toner in the hopper is detected accurately as the total amount, and the invariably stable detection of the remaining amount of toner is performed.
