abstract PURPOSE: To obtain a compsn. which has improved curability and is useful as a paint vehicle having excellent gloss and weather resistance, by preparing an ester from an acid component comprising a satd. alicyclic polybasic acid and a polybasic acid having a specified half-equivalent point potential in a specified ratio and preparing varnish by using the resulting polyester resin. n CONSTITUTION: A polyester resin in which the acid component is composed of (a)mol of a satd. alicyclic polybasic acid (A), (b)mol of a polybasic acid (B) exhibiting a half- equivalent point potential of -350mV as measured by potentiometry in a nonaqueous system in a state exhibiting the acid value of the resin and other polybasic acid and/or a monobasic acid (C) in a proportion defined by formula I , is prepd. by steps comprising a step wherein (a)mol of the polybasic acid (A), (b-b 1 )mol (wherein (b 1 )mol is equal to or less than (b)mol or is an amount determined by formula (II) of the polybasic acid (B), (c)mol of the polybasic acid and/or monobasic acid (C) and a polyhydric alcohol are subjected to an esterification reaction to prepare a polyester prepolymer having a resin acid value M, wherein M=N (1-x/100); and a step wherein an esterification reaction between the prepolymer and (b 1 )mol of the polybasic acid (B) is conducted until the resin acid value N is obtd.
