titleOfInvention Production of polymer latex
abstract PURPOSE: To obtain a polymer latex good in the monodisperseness of a particle diameter and excellent in dispersion stability, by polymerizing a hydrophobic vinyl monomer in the absence of an emulsifier in the presence of an aqueous medium and a mercaptoalkanol compound. n CONSTITUTION: A polymer latex is prepared by polymerizing a starting material comprising a hydrophobic vinyl monomer of a solubility in water of below 3pts.wt. per 100pts.wt. water (e.g., styrene) or a mixture containing a major proportion of this hydrophobic vinyl monomer and a vinyl monomer copolymerizable therewith (e.g., glycidyl methacrylate) in the absence of an emulsifier in an aqueous medium which is heated to a polymerization temperature (e.g., 40W 80°C) and to which a radical polymerization initiator and a mercaptoalkanol compound (e.g., 2W3C ercaptoalkanol compound) in an amount of 0.005W 0.4pts.wt., per 100pts.wt. above monomer are added. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1984,JPO&Japio
